Tottenham suffer disappointing player setback as tough run of fixtures loom

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been delighted with the fine form of Harry Winks over the last year or so. Brought into the fold on a more permanent basis by Mauricio Pochettino, the Englishman has returned the favour with some impressive performances.

Despite being a young player, he always looks confident and assured in the midfield, and he looks set to be a regular in the team going forward.

However, the Englishman now looks set to miss a few games through injury – having reportedly suffered a setback in his recovery from injury. He hasn’t played since Boxing Day, and whilst his return has been expected for the last few games, fitness expert Ben Dinnery has revealed some bad news on Twitter.

According to Dinnery, Winks may not return until the end of January – with Mauricio Pochettino now set to have to deal without his midfielder for at least another two weeks.

It’s a significant blow for the Argentine manager, with Harry Winks evolving into a crucial player under him. Alongside experienced midfielders like Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele, the 21-year-old has been more than holding his own – much to the joy of our resident Lilywhites.

Significantly for Spurs, they have a few tough games on the horizon, and so this setback could not have come at a worse time. Between now and the end of the month, they’re set to take on Southampton, Newport County and Man Utd – a task that will demand their strongest players. What’s more, their first three games in February are against Liverpool, Arsenal and Juventus – and they’ll want Winks to be fully fit for those games.

Pochettino will be hoping for the best.

Landlord’s Verdict

You’d like to think that, certainly by the Juventus game, Winks will be back to 100%. However, it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that he will need a week or two following his return to action to get back to full fitness and match sharpness. That poses quite the problem for the Lilywhites.

Winks is important to this team, and they often lack creativity without the Englishman. Mousa Dembele will need to step up in his absence.
