Tottenham will have to compete with Real Madrid for Frenkie de Jong

Tottenham Hotspur will need to be prepared to have a tough battle on their hands if they are to land one of their targets.

According to reports by Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong has started to attract interest from Real Madrid in recent days.

And, to make things worse for Tottenham, it appears that the Spanish giants are ready to splash out €80million on the 21-year-old, who they deem fit to replace Luka Modric.

The midfielder is thought to have attracted interest from a host of Europe’s biggest clubs, giving Mauricio Pochettino’s side some real concern in trying to convince him to join them.

Spurs, as it is well documented, failed to bring in a single player to the club in the summer transfer window, with it believed that a lack of finances were available to bring in the talent required.

The majority of the club’s money is being used on their new stadium, which is yet to be completed, which will leave them short of being able to compete with the world’s biggest sides.

The Verdict:

Real Madrid’s added interest for De Jong’s services is something that Spurs did not need.

There is no doubt that the 21-year-old is a world-class talent and it is not a surprise that a number of clubs are keen on acquiring him in the near future.

However, if the Spanish giants are to splash €80m on the midfielder, it could leave Tottenham out of the race for his signature altogether.
