The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are still waiting for their side to make a signing this summer…
Unlike most of their Premier League rivals, Tottenham have been comparably quiet and have yet to sign anyone, leaving the fans in the Transfer Tavern feeling rather concerned.
Clearly, the Lilywhites are keen to avoid over paying for mediocre talent, but with just a few weeks to go until the start of the season, this approach could come back to bite them.
Indeed, their hesitancy to spend big this summer could even see them miss out on Ross Barkley, with the Mirror reporting that Tottenham are not willing to match the contract he was offered at Everton – with the £120,000-per-week salary simply not feasible at White Hart Lane. Rather, whilst the player and club are keen on a move, the Englishman will reportedly be forced to take a reduced salary if he moves to the club.
Barkley has struggled over the last few years, but Mauricio Pochettino clearly feels like he is the man to bring the best out of him – and given Barkley’s interest, it appears as though the feeling is mutual. Their ideas on salary, though, are not.
In truth, Tottenham’s approach with Barkley does make a lot of sense.
Players like Harry Kane and Dele Alli are clearly far superior and will make more of an impact next seaosn, so Barkley doesn’t really deserve to earn close to that number until he has proven himself.
That said, Pochettino will be hoping that this doesn’t lead to the Englishman passing on a move to White Hart Lane, as he is clearly the perfect player for the club. The Argentine has a strong record of building players of his quality, and a move could work out for all parties.
If Barkley really wants to develop, Tottenham are perfect for him.
