The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are becoming increasingly concerned by the doubts which linger over the future of Toby Alderweireld and, recent reports suggest he could be on his way out of the club this summer.
Toby Alderweireld has barely featured in Tottenham’s first-team since he returned from injury in January and Pochettino’s reluctance to select him has served to intensify speculation linking him with a move away from the club. Whether the Belgian international will remain with the club or not remains to be seen, but recent reports from the Daily Star suggest he could be replaced in the summer window.
According to the report, Tottenham are interested in signing Leicester City’s Harry Maguire this summer in a deal which cost set them back £50 million, although they face competition for his signature from Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal.
All of the aforementioned clubs would be ideal destinations for Maguire (valued at £13.5 million by Transfermarkt) at this stage in his development, but the presence of Pochettino and the probable departure of Alderweireld makes a transfer to Tottenham the most ideal for him this summer.
Pochettino has proven during his stint as Tottenham manager that he has an excellent talent for nurturing English talent and harnessing their potential, so Maguire would undoubtedly be in a fantastic environment for his development.
Moreover, the fact that Spurs only have two natural centre-backs to choose from aside from Alderweireld, namely Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen also makes Spurs an ideal destination as he should have no problem breaking into the first-team and playing in both important Premier League clashes and Champions League fixtures.
In the current climate of the Premier League, there are few, if any better places for players to realise their potential than at Tottenham Hotspur and, with the move to the new stadium scheduled for the beginning of the 2018/19 season, it’s an exciting time for any player to move to the North-London side.
