The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern were frustrated at their 1-1 draw with Southampton in the Premier League last weekend. However, they were very impressed with the performance of Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse.
Ward-Prowse dictated the midfield and impressed with some delightful passes and a few long-range shots, showing our north London locals exactly why he was capped by England at the start of the campaign. With that in mind, Tottenham Hotspur should make a move for the 23-year-old this January or in the summer as a long-term addition to their central midfield department.
Tottenham have been renowned for nurturing young English talent over the last few years. The likes of Harry Kane, Danny Rose, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and now Harry Winks have all established themselves as regulars in the Tottenham team and are now starring for England. Other players, like Kyle Walker, have also favoured this route to the international scene.
James Ward-Prowse is on the verge of the England squad and is really staking a claim for a spot in the World Cup squad. The once-capped England international surely has Gareth Southgate’s attention after a string of top displays in a struggling Southampton side of late.
Spurs should take advantage of the fact that Southampton are struggling and launch a bid for one of England’s finest young players. Ward-Prowse offers youth and experience and his best years are still ahead of him. But perhaps the Southampton academy product needs to move away from the south coast to further his career.
With Eric Dier flitting in and out of form, Mauricio Pochettino should move him to the back and make a bid for Ward-Prowse to continue raiding his old club for players. Rated at just £13.5m on Transfermarkt, he’d be a wonderful signing.
