Tottenham supporters have been pretty upbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team comfortably beat Watford 2-0 on Monday night to move five points clear of Chelsea in the race for a Premier League top four spot.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the Hornets having seen the Blues edge past Swansea City on Saturday to move within two points of Spurs, and very much in contention for a Champions League qualification place. Yet the North Londoners restored their five-point cushion over Antonio Conte’s side as goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane secured a routine win at Wembley, thus giving Pochettino’s team the ascendency in the race for Champions League football.
As such, there have been many happy Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can get the job done between now and the end of the season, and thus secure a third successive season of elite European football.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Christian Eriksen with a big money move to Paris Saint-Germain this summer.
And while this is sure to concern and worry our resident Tottenham fans, £22.5 million-rated Spurs star Erik Lamela (as per Transfermarkt) may well get the chance to save his career in North London after a testing recent few months.
Ultimately, the Argentina international has struggled to command regular football since his return from a hip injury back in November, an injury which kept him out for the best part of a year.
The 26-year-old has earned just five Premier League starts for the club since then and has so far failed to net at all for Pochettino’s side, with several substitute appearances suggesting that he is in the manager’s plans, but not at the forefront of his thoughts. And with Lucas Moura signing from PSG during January, he could well fall even further down the pecking order in the months to come.
As such, his first team struggles have attracted attention in recent times with Inter Milan reportedly keen on luring him away from North London this summer, although the possibility of Eriksen leaving may well open the door for Lamela to remain at Tottenham.
Clearly, losing Eriksen would be a massive blow for Spurs as a lot of what good they produce comes through the Denmark international, but in Lamela they have someone who has been playing in the Premier League for many years, and very much looked to be peaking just prior to injury.
Pochettino does appear to be managing his gametime upon return from injury with the hope that the 26-year-old returns to his best form, and he’d certainly get more opportunities and thus more playing time were Eriksen to depart to the French capital this summer.
So while the Dane’s possible departure will not be well received by Spurs fans up and down the country, it could well serve to give Lamela the chance to save his Tottenham career.
