Tottenham supporters have been pretty satisfied in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team move a step closer towards Champions League qualification courtesy of a 2-0 win over Watford at Wembley on Monday night.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the Hertfordshire-based outfit having seen fifth place Chelsea move to within two points of them following their win at Swansea City on Saturday, thus piling the pressure on Spurs to respond against the Hornets. And they did just that as goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane secured a routine success for the North London outfit, thus restoring their five-point lead over the Blues with three games to play.
As such, there have been many delighted Tottenham supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing in confidence that their team will indeed hold off Antonio Conte’s side to clinch a third successive season of Champions League football.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking Christian Eriksen with a summer move to French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
And were the Dane to indeed make the move to the Parc des Princes, Spurs must seek to replace him with Leicester City’s £45 million-rated star Riyad Mahrez (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, Tottenham would without doubt be losing one of their most influential and important stars were Eriksen to leave the club this summer, with the 26-year-old having once again enjoyed a stellar season with 14 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.
Arguably, the vast majority of Spurs’ best play comes through the Denmark international, while he also has the ability to conjure something up out of nothing, be it from open play or in dead-ball situations.
And that is why they simply have to replace him with Mahrez, as the 27-year-old has proven throughout his time at Leicester that is capable of similar moments of brilliance.
The Algeria international scored 17 goals and laid on 11 assists to inspire the Foxes to the Premier League title back in 2016, and while last term wasn’t quite his best, he has returned to form again this time round with ten goals and nine assists in 33 league appearances.
Certainly, Mahrez is up there alongside Wilfried Zaha as one of the best and most influential attackers outside of the top six, and with credentials in inspiring a team to title-winning success before, alongside the ability to produce moments of magic, he would add a huge amount to Pochettino’s squad at Tottenham.
Yes, he maybe doesn’t have the same vision and eye for a pass as Eriksen (there aren’t many that do), but adding him to an attacking unit consisting of Alli, Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, and Lucas Moura would minimise the effect of Eriksen’s departure, as between the five of them they have almost everything required of a strong creative unit.
As such, Spurs must seek to replace PSG-bound Eriksen with Leicester’s Mahrez this summer.
