Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their side seeking to build upon their impressive third place finish last time round.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have comfortably become one of the best teams in the country in the last few years in recording three successive top four finishes in English football’s top tier, having finished third in 2016, second in 2017, and of course third last term. However, the North Londoners ended up a staggering 23 points adrift of champions Manchester City to suggest that they remain some way away from a title challenge, although some big signings this summer could see them bridge the gap to Pep Guardiola’s side this time round.
As such, there are many optimistic Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that their club are ‘keeping tabs’ on Mario Gotze’s situation at Borussia Dortmund.
And with that report also going on to say that a move might be ‘worth the gamble’, they are absolutely right given the Germany international’s pedigree on the big stage, and indeed the level he has hit in the years gone by at both Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
Ultimately, the last few years have been tricky for the 26-year-old, what with illness and indeed injury restricting the attacker to just 21 appearances in the 2015/16 campaign for Bayern, before mustering just 16 upon his return to Dortmund the season after.

And with just two goals last term, it’s clear that Gotze is nowhere near the level he once was for the two German giants, to the point that he has unsurprisingly missed out on selection for Germany’s 23-man World Cup squad this summer.
However, while all that would suggest that a move would be a risk, there is also little doubting that the 26-year-old has genuine quality in the final third of the pitch – after all, it was he who scored a wonderful late goal to win Germany the World Cup four years ago.
The attacker bagged 36 goals and laid on 24 assists in what many viewed as an unspectacular stint at Bayern between 2013 and 2016, while the German ace certainly played his part in helping Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund reach the Champions League final back in 2013 by scoring 16 goals that season, as well as laying on 20 assists.
Thus, it’s evident that Gotze has what it takes to perform and succeed at the highest level, with his trophy-winning experience for Bayern, Dortmund, and of course his country likely to benefit a Spurs team that haven’t always produced their best in the big games in the past few years.
So while his recent struggles may be of concern to Pochettino and indeed the Spurs supporters, the 26-year-old remains a quality attacker, and one that would certainly bolster Tottenham’s attacking ranks heading into the 2018/19 season.
As such, while some may see it as a gamble, the addition of the £16.2 million-rated German star (as per Transfermarkt) would certainly be worth the gamble.
