Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino and striker Harry Kane have signed long-term deals with the club.
Argentine Pochettino took over at the North London outfit back in 2014 after impressing in a short stint at Southampton, and he has since turned Spurs into one of the best teams in the country with three successive top four finishes in the Premier League. And England international Kane has become one of the best strikers in world football in recent times with a staggering 140 goals in 213 games for Tottenham, with his tally of 41 last term the most he has scored in a single season.
As such, there are many excited and expectant Spurs supporters in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be interested by recent reports suggesting that Paris Saint-Germain ace Marco Verratti has been offered to Manchester United.
And Spurs must seek to join the race and thus add the £63 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to their squad, in a signing which would go some way to transforming Tottenham into genuine Premier League title contenders.
Ultimately, 25-year-old Verratti only mustered 22 Ligue 1 appearances for the French giants last season, with injury bringing his campaign to a premature end, and he has since reportedly held ‘dispiriting’ talks with new manager Thomas Tuchel, who has replaced Unai Emery in the Parc des Princes hotseat.
As such, his future at the club is hugely uncertain heading into the remainder of the summer window, and Pochettino’s Spurs are one side that simply must take advantage of such doubt by making a move which could ignite a title charge.
It appears that influential midfielder Mousa Dembele could well be on his way out of the North London club this summer amid interest from Serie A, what with the 30-year-old having yet to agree an extension to a contract which expires in 12 months’ time.
And losing him would leave a gaping hole in the Spurs midfield ranks, a hole which could certainly be filled by Italy international Verratti.
Ultimately, the 25-year-old is one of the most highly-rated midfielders in Europe and appears to have everything required of a central midfielder to succeed at Premier League level – be it positional awareness, defensive discipline, or indeed composure on the ball under pressure. Add in the know-how in getting the job done in league football, having won five Ligue 1 titles at PSG, and Verratti has it all.
Clearly, he’d add a great deal to the Spurs midfield ranks, and as such they wouldn’t be hit too hard were Dembele to leave the club this summer – remember, both he and Victor Wanyama produced the goods in helping Tottenham finish second to Chelsea in 2017.
And were Verratti to produce an effective and formidable partnership with Kenya international Wanyama, there’s no reason why, with the attacking talent in front of them and defensive resolve behind, Pochettino’s side cannot challenge the likes of Manchester City for the title this season.
