Audacious move for £54m-rated ace would be a huge statement of intent from Tottenham

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the remainder of the summer transfer window following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new deal with the club.

The 46-year-old took over the North Londoners back in 2014 and has since transformed them into one of the best teams in England, with this term their third successive finish in the Premier League’s top four. And although the ex-Southampton boss has yet to deliver a trophy during his stint at the club, several of our resident Tottenham fans are optimistic that he can be the man to do just that in the near future.

However, for the North London club to regularly compete for major honours, signings will be needed over the summer, which is why some of those Spurs fans lining up at the bar are intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Thibaut Courtois could leave Chelsea this summer.

And after a slightly unconvincing season from Tottenham number one Hugo Lloris, Pochettino’s side should make an audacious move for the £54 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), a move which would be a huge statement of intent from the North London outfit.

Ultimately, 31-year-old Lloris has been a magnificent servant to Spurs ever since his move to the club back in 2012, with for the most part the France international proving to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

However, the former Lyon and Nice star endured some testing moments in between the sticks for Tottenham this term and made some costly errors over the course of the campaign, to the point that some of those Spurs fans in the Tavern are beginning to question his place in the side.

But the competition simply isn’t there at the club at present – there’s little doubt it would be though if they land Courtois.

Like Lloris, the Belgium international has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League in the last few seasons, not least in helping Chelsea win the title back in 2017 with 16 clean sheets and just 28 goals against over the course of the campaign.

And with 15 clean sheets for Antonio Conte’s men this time round as well, the 26-year-old continues to underline his top-flight credentials, so while it appears that Lloris may be regressing, that certainly isn’t the case with the Chelsea goalkeeper.

So not only would a move for Courtois arguably improve the Tottenham first team, but luring the Belgian ace away from Stamford Bridge would be a huge statement of intent from the North London outfit.

Pochettino has made it clear in recent weeks that chairman Daniel Levy needs to be ‘brave’ in the transfer window this summer if Spurs are to challenge for major honours, as although they finished third in the top-flight this term, they never challenged for the title.

And a last-16 exit in the Champions League at the hands of Juventus suggests that they are still some way away from winning that competition as well – they simply have to invest, and invest heavily, if they are to challenge the top clubs in both England and indeed Europe.

And landing Courtois, who has already been linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Liverpool, will certainly be a statement signing from Pochettino’s team ahead of the new season.
