In news that has the Football Transfer Tavern buzzing with excitement, Goal.com have reported that Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas is still interested in signing Shakhtar Donetsk’s Willian.
The Brazilian has long been a target of AVB who has once again confirmed that the club are considering a bid for him. Willian of course has already professed his love for AVB, claiming that the pair are still in contact and that AVB is a ‘friend’ to him.
The quality of Willian was clear to see in the Champions League group stages and the player was pivotal in securing the Ukrainians passage to the knockout stages. This combined with the fact that Shakhtar do not see themselves as a feeder club has made it increasingly difficult for Spurs to land the 24-year-old, leading AVB to claim: “We contacted Willian and he is one of the players in which we had an interest. I like his style but we could not reach a deal with Shakhtar in the summer. Shakhtar are a tough club to negotiate with. They don’t need the money, they can keep their players.”
Of course the addition of such a top player would put a dent in the pocket of the North London club, but this would be one they could certainly afford should they sell Gareth Bale to rumoured suitors Real Madrid. AVB also claimed to be watching fellow Brazilian forward Leandro Damiao who plays in his homeland for Internacional.
