Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side ease to a 2-0 victory over Premier League strugglers Huddersfield Town on Saturday, thus strengthening their grip on a top four spot.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Terriers unbeaten in their previous 16 matches in all competitions, a run which has seen them move into fourth place in the Premier League, and indeed closer to a berth in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. And the North London outfit tightened their grip on fourth place on Saturday as a brace from Son Heung-min sealed a routine win over David Wagner’s Huddersfield at Wembley, thus setting them up perfectly for the return leg of their Champions League last 16 clash against Juventus on Wednesday.
Consequently, there have been many happy Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet they are unlikely to be overly pleased with a recent report from Correire dello Sport (via talkSPORT), which suggests that defender Jan Vertonghen is on Lazio’s transfer wishlist ahead of the summer window.
The 30-year-old made the move to the North London outfit back in 2012 and has since played a key part in their rise up the Premier League table, playing 240 games for the club, 179 of which coming at Premier League level.
In that time, the Belgium international has easily become one of the best centre-backs in the division, yet he is reportedly being eyed up by Italian giants Lazio this summer, who are reportedly set to make an approach for the defender in the summer.
And this is news which is likely to concern manager Pochettino, given how influential the 30-year-old has been since his arrival back in 2012.
Landlord’s verdict: Jan Vertonghen has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League since his move to Tottenham back in 2012, but the 30-year-old has just over a year left to run on his contract with the North London outfit.
And reports suggest that Lazio are eyeing up a surprise move for the Belgium international this summer, what with Stefan De Vrij likely to leave the club at the expiration of his contract.
While it is unlikely that Spurs will even contemplate selling Vertonghen, they could ideally do with agreeing a new deal with the 30-year-old to completely quash any transfer talk – otherwise the likelihood of a summer departure could well increase in the coming months.
