Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern have been reacting to a story in the Telegraph that claims Toby Alderweireld still can’t come to an agreement with Tottenham over the extension of his contract, and that Mauricio Pochettino will give the green light to his exit if the right offer comes in for Belgian in summer.
Whilst the Spurs fans propping our bar up won’t want to see Alderweireld leave, the form of the Lilywhites’ back line this season has still been very impressive without him. The Belgian joined the club from Atletico Madrid ahead of the 2015/16 season and the 29-year-old didn’t take long to endear himself to the fans, scoring goals against Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal as Spurs finished 3rd, their highest ever finish in the Premier League at the time.
Tottenham fans will be upset to lose their man, as the signing of Alderweireld coincided with the club becoming a dominant force in the Premier League. The contract situation with the defender has looked bleak for a while. Spurs are reportedly unwilling to break their wage structure to offer Alderweireld a new contract and whilst the Belgian has an extension clause that would see his contract extend from summer 2019 to summer 2020, it also contains a £25 million release clause. This has prompted the club to start looking at offers of around £40 million for the player.

I don’t want him to go either, but I’ve heard that we’ve offered him the money he wants but he wants to go and see out one more 3 year contract abroad(he’s 29)at an easier league. I don’t blame him, it’s a job for him after all,but it’s a shame and they can’t make him stay.
