According to a recent report from AS, Thibaut Courtois looks set to make a summer move to Real Madrid. The Chelsea goalkeeper has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge during the close season and as such looks set to return to the Spanish capital, having spent three years on loan at rivals Atletico between 2011 and 2014.

And Courtois’ seemingly imminent move to the Bernabeu is likely to raise questions regarding the future of current first-choice Keylar Navas, which should be of interest to Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as he seeks to find strong competition for number one Hugo Lloris.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while the Frenchman enjoyed a fine World Cup in helping his country win the tournament, 31-year-old Lloris endured a below-par campaign between the sticks for Spurs, making some costly errors over the course of the season.

Yet the distinct lack of competition in the form of Michel Vorm and Paulo Gazzaniga was always likely to work in Lloris’ favour, with Pochettino unlikely to drop the 31-year-old given the alternatives simply aren’t at the level required to deputise effectively, hence Lloris retained the gloves throughout the season.

And while the France international deserves great credit for an excellent World Cup campaign, Pochettino may well be thinking about bringing in greater competition for the 31-year-old, and there is no doubt that Real’s Navas would do just that.

The 31-year-old made the move to the Spanish giants back in 2014 after excelling for Costa Rica at the World Cup that summer, and while he didn’t immediately become number one, he has since claimed the gloves in appearing 141 times for the club, keeping 45 clean sheets along the way.

And with only 138 goals conceded in that time, alongside helping the European heavyweights to three successive Champions League crowns and indeed the La Liga title in 2017, it’s clear that Navas is a hugely adept goalkeeper, and exactly the sort that could push Lloris and compete for the number one jersey at Tottenham.

And with Courtois seemingly on the way to Real, question marks will surely arise regarding Navas’ future, which is why Pochettino must seek to place doubt in the 31-year-old’s mind by making a move for the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
