The Tottenham Hotspur fans here in the Transfer Tavern are slightly concerned. While life is good under Mauricio Pochettino right now and the thought of a new stadium is seriously exciting, constant speculation in regard to Real Madrid’s reported interest in their Argentine coach is a worry.
Over the years, Spurs have had to deal with the Spanish giants stealing their best players in the shape of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale, so our local Lilywhites are preparing themselves for the worst. Indeed, though they hope Pochettino sticks around long-term, it’d be foolish not to earmark potential replacements.
With that in mind, this is a shoutout for Brendan Rodgers. Rebuilding his career with Celtic, the former Liverpool coach has proven himself to be a fantastic coach, one who can develop talent while delivering an attacking and exciting brand of football.
The likes of Raheem Sterling and Moussa Dembele show just how well Rodgers can nurture burgeoning attacking talent, something likely to stand him in good stead should the Tottenham job arise. Obviously, judging him on his almost imperious domestic record in Scotland may not be the smartest idea, though his work at Anfield has largely gone forgotten.
Rodgers was the man who took the Reds their closest to winning a Premier League title and surely another crack at it in England would appeal to the man, despite his love affair with the Bhoys. Should Pochettino depart, Daniel Levy could do a lot worse than the Northern Irishman.
