Tottenham had Hugo Lloris to thank as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham at the weekend.

Erik Lamela nodded home the only goal of the game just before half-time, converting from Moussa Sissoko’s cross to leave Lukasz Fabianski no chance. The Hammers piled on the pressure, but Lloris was in fine form to deny them. The Frenchman earned his clean sheet and gave Tottenham their fourth consecutive victory in the Premier League.

The result sees Spurs gain ground on Chelsea after the Blues drew with Manchester United. Attention will now turn to a must-win Champions League fixture against PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday. As well as fixture preparation, Mauricio Pochettino must be on the lookout for potential January recruits.

One man he should target is West Ham midfielder – Declan Rice. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the 19-year-old has progressed through the youth ranks and is a now a crucial player in Manuel Pellegrini’s side. However, he has less than one year remaining on his contract, and negotiations to extend his stay at the London Stadium are yet to advance.

Rice is comfortable at defensive midfield or centre-back and could prove to be a very useful option to Pochettino. The Argentine has a reputation for bringing the best out of young players, and Rice could flourish under his tutelage. Rice is yet to choose whether to represent England or Ireland and to move to Tottenham would certainly increase his chances of being selected by Gareth Southgate.

If Rice fails to pen a new deal with the Hammers, Tottenham must snap him up.
