Dembele upgrade: Audacious swoop on £58.5m-rated star makes perfect sense for Tottenham

Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for the club to make a signing with the window shutting before the season starts.

Last season, Premier League clubs voted to bring forward deadline day to make sure squads are finalised before the season commences. Therefore, the summer window will slam shut on August 9 – two days before the start of the 18/19 campaign. To make matters worse, clubs outside of England will still have all of August to complete their deals. Spurs fans in the Tavern are starting to wish the vote hadn’t taken place.

Mauricio Pochettino is yet to make a signing this summer with the World Cup tying up a number of potential transfer targets. The Lilywhites have just over a month to strengthen their squad to challenge Manchester City for the title. A priority will be finding a replacement for Mousa Dembele who is set to leave the club.

Dembele has been a mainstay in the Spurs midfield for many years. Therefore, Spurs should replace him with Juventus pass master – Miralem Pjanic. Valued at £58.5m by Transfermarkt, the Bosnian international has blossomed into one of the world’s finest midfielders during his time in Turin. He remains a key player for the Old Lady, but Juve may be forced into a sale should they complete a stunning £88m move for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Pjanic made 49 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals and registering nine assists. The 28-year-old would be a significant upgrade on Dembele if he made the switch to North London. He averaged 1.9 key passes per game compared to Dembele’s 0.6 last season. Pjanic also made more significantly more long and through balls than the Belgian (WhoScored).

He would be an excellent first signing of the summer for the Lilywhites.
