Doubts emerge over defender’s future with Tottenham reportedly ready to pounce

Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team book their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup courtesy of an easy 3-0 victory over fellow Premier League outfit Swansea City on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men got the better of AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Rochdale to reach the last eight of the world’s oldest club competition, although certainly made hard work of their run having been taken to a replay by the latter two EFL sides. Nonetheless, the North London outfit made serene progress into the last four on Saturday as a Christian Eriksen brace alongside Erik Lamela’s first half strike secured a routine success over Carlos Carvalhal’s Swans, thus earning Pochettino’s Spurs a clash with Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United in the semi-finals next month.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, and they are likely to be further interested by a recent report from The Daily Star, which suggests that their club are ready to pounce after doubts emerged over the future of United defender Luke Shaw.

The 22-year-old made the move to Old Trafford back in 2014 after impressing under Pochettino at Southampton, yet he has found the going tough in the North West with just 62 appearances to his name, just 39 of which have come in the Premier League.

And the England international’s future at the Red Devils was plunged into further doubt over the weekend following Mourinho’s scathing criticism of the left-back in his side’s 2-0 victory over Brighton in the FA Cup, with Shaw substituted at half time following a below-par first half showing.

And reports suggest that the 22-year-old ‘will be sold’ come the end of the season, and it appears that Spurs are ready to pounce in a bid to lure the talented left back to North London ahead of the new season.

And a possible reunion with Pochettino may well be of interest to Shaw, who evidently needs to make a change in a bid to resurrect his flailing career.

Landlord’s verdict: Luke Shaw has not found things easy since his move to Manchester United three-and-a-half years ago, with injuries and a seemingly strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho resulting in the 22-year-old appearing just 62 times for the Red Devils.

And following his below-par efforts against Brighton on Saturday, which drew criticism from the United boss, it seems that the left back will indeed be let go this summer, in news which has reportedly alerted Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham.

The North London outfit are reportedly ‘in the hunt’ for the England international, and given how good Shaw was under Pochettino at Southampton, the Argentine may well know exactly how to get the best out of the 22-year-old once again, and thus set him back on the right path to becoming the full back his potential promises.

But whether a deal, which may well include Danny Rose somewhere along the line given United’s reported interest in him, can indeed be done between the two clubs remains to be seen.
