Tottenham have been rocked by the news that Jan Vertonghen could be sidelined until December.

The Belgium defender was taken off injured during Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over Huddersfield back in September. The 31-year-old has made eight appearances so far this season, but the problem looks set to keep him out of action until December. The news will come as a blow to Mauricio Pochettino with Spurs now short on options at centre back.

Regardless of Vertonghen’s injury, the Argentine would be wise to strengthen his defence when the January transfer window reopens. The future of Toby Alderweireld is still uncertain as the Belgian hasn’t penned a new contract and Manchester United could rekindle their interest. Adding another defender to his squad could prove to be a wise move.

One man he should be keeping tabs on is Porto wonderkid – Eder Militao. Valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian has already been linked with an exit despite joining the Portuguese champions from Sao Paulo this summer. Reports have suggested that Inter Milan are monitoring his situation in Portugal.

The 20-year-old could prove to be a useful option as he is comfortable at both centre and right back as well as defensive midfield. Militao has averaged an impressive 1.3 and 1.5 tackles per game in LIGA NOS this season. The youngster is also a massive threat in the air, winning 3.3 aerial duels per game this season, meaning he should have no trouble dealing with the physicality of the Premier League (WhoScored).

His impressive performances did not go unnoticed with Militao receiving his first call-up to the senior Brazilian national team. It won’t be long before Europe’s biggest clubs come calling so Spurs must ensure they are first in line for his signature.
