Tottenham are set to activate the clause to extend Toby Alderweireld’s stay at the club beyond next summer.
The defender’s contract was set to expire in the summer, but Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed the club have activated the clause to extend his deal until the summer of 2020. However, this means that the £25m release clause in his contract will also be active during the summer transfer window. Failure to agree on new terms suggests that the Belgian will leave the club at the end of the season.
Manchester United are long-term admirers of the defender and may want to rekindle their interest at the end of the campaign. Alderweireld’s potential departure will come as a blow to Pochettino who should now enter the transfer market to search for his replacement.
The ideal man to fill Alderweireld’s boots is Porto defender – Eder Militao. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian snapped up by the Portuguese champions during the summer transfer window after impressing in his homeland for Sao Paulo. Militao has hit the ground running in Portugal, becoming a crucial player for his side and attracting interest from all around Europe as a result of his impressive showings.
The 20-year-old possesses fantastic pace for a defender allowing him to keep up with the quickest of forwards. Militao is also exceptionally strong meaning he should have no issues dealing with the physicality of the Premier League. The Brazilian is also composed on the ball and displays a wonderful range of short and long range passing making him ideal for Pochettino’s system. The youngster is also capable of playing at right-back, and his versatility will definitely interest the Argentine tactician.
Porto will want a huge fee for their prized asset, but Militao has the potential to become one of the best defenders in England – Tottenham must pay whatever it takes.
