Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern can reflect on another top-four finish in the Premier League with a brand new stadium waiting in the wings.
A third-place finish for Spurs means they have confirmed Champions League football again, but investment is needed if they are to push forward and challenge for the title. A host of players are expected to leave the club with Mousa Dembele, and Toby Alderweireld set for exits. Indeed, Mauricio Pochettino needs to be backed in the upcoming window or Spurs risk losing him, putting an end to their wonderful project of late.
Owner Daniel Levy needs to finance a summer revamp to transform the Lilywhites from title contenders to title candidates. Alderweireld’s departure would leave a gap that needs filling. The man for the job could be Swansea defender – Alfie Mawson.
Spurs have been linked with a move for the Englishman in the past but now following their relegation, he is likely to depart. Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the 24-year-old has developed into a key player at the Liberty Stadium, playing in every one of their Premier League games this season. Now, according to the Guardian, he will be available for just £20m.
In the current market, £20m for a player of Mawson’s quality is daylight robbery. Competition for his signature will be fierce, but the allure of Champions League football and a new stadium may give Spurs the advantage.
