Mauricio Pochettino must begin his search for a replacement with Mousa Dembele close to leaving the club.
The Belgium international’s future has been uncertain following weeks of speculation over the summer. Ultimately, Dembele decided to stay in north London but is now nearing an exit with his contract set to expire in the summer. The ex-Fulham man is reportedly (as per BBC Sport) on his way to China after Tottenham accepted an £11m offer for his services.
For his replacement, Pochettino should turn his attention to the Bundesliga.
The ideal target would be Hoffenheim midfielder – Florian Grillitsch. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the 23-year-old made his name for Werder Bremen before joining his current employers in the summer of 2017. Grillitsch has been a mainstay in the side since and has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season.
The Austrian is a fantastic defensive midfielder who is perfect for Pochettino’s system making him the perfect replacement for Dembele. Grillitsch loves to get stuck in, averaging an impressive 2.3 tackles per game this season, meaning he would add another layer of protection to the back four. The Austria international also reads the game expertly, making 2.8 interceptions per game in the Bundesliga this season (WhoScored). Indeed, Grillitsch would need to improve his technical ability to reach Dembele’s level but working with Pochettino could be just what he needs.
Replacing the Belgian midfielder would be easy if the Argentine can lure this Bundesliga star to the Premier League.
