According to a recent report from The Independent, Tottenham are interested in a move for defender Joachim Andersen. The 22-year-old currently plays his football at Italian outfit Sampdoria and has done so since leaving Dutch giants FC Twente back in 2017, with his excellent exploits in Serie A seemingly attracting the interest of Spurs chief Mauricio Pochettino.
And that’s because reports suggest that the North London outfit are eyeing up a move for the 22-year-old as a possible replacement for Toby Alderweireld, whose new deal with Tottenham has brought a £25 million release clause into play ahead of the summer transfer window.
And while there is little doubting that Andersen has a bright future in the game, Spurs should forget about the Denmark Under-21 international, as the perfect replacement for Alderweireld is already at Tottenham in the form of Davinson Sanchez.
Ultimately, while Spurs fans may have been thrilled to see Belgium international Alderweireld sign a new deal with their club earlier this month, all it has done is plunge his future into even greater doubt ahead of the summer given the lowly release clause now in his contract.
And with French giants and big-spenders Paris Saint-Germain reportedly keen on the 29-year-old, alongside long-term interest from Premier League side Manchester United, it looks a tall order for Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy to convince the centre back of a longer stay in North London.
And 22-year-old Andersen certainly appears to be a great centre back in the making after shining in the heart of the Sampdoria backline this season, with the young Danish star starting all but one of their Serie A matches this time round, in which time the Italian club have kept seven clean sheets and shipped just 21 goals.
And a move to Tottenham under a manager like Pochettino, who has a proven track-record of developing and improving young talent into world stars, could see Anderson seriously reap the rewards from joining the North London club, as could Spurs given just how good the 22-year-old looks set to be.
However, there is little doubting that Sanchez has made great strides and made quite the impression since moving to Tottenham back in the summer of 2017 to suggest that he is the man to usurp Alderweireld in the Spurs team.
The 22-year-old had impressed for Dutch heavyweights Ajax in the 2016/17 campaign to prompt Pochettino to spend big-money on the centre back ahead of the 2017/18 season, and that is certainly proving to be an inspired decision given how adept and comfortable the centre back looked in the heart of the Tottenham team last term.
The Colombia international appeared 31 times in the Premier League for Spurs and 41 times in all competitions to help Pochettino’s side to third place in the division and the last 16 of the Champions League, with the 22-year-old actually doing a fine job in keeping Alderweireld out of the side upon his return from injury in the second half of the campaign.
That itself speaks volumes about just how highly Pochettino rates the Colombian star, and while injury has restricted the 22-year-old to only 11 Premier League appearances this term, last season proved that the centre back has a very bright future ahead of him in the English top-flight.
So while a move for the highly-rated Andersen would make a lot of sense, Tottenham should forget about splashing out on the Denmark international, as the perfect Alderweireld replacement is already at the North London club in the form of Sanchez.
