Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team all but secure a top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 3-1 victory over fifth place Chelsea.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with the defending champions just five points ahead of the Blues in the table, but in fine form having won each of their preceding four matches. Yet the race for the top four looked on when Alvaro Morata gave Antonio Conte’s side the lead, only for a double from Dele Alli alongside a magnificent Christian Eriksen strike to clinch the victory for the North London club, thus moving them eight points clear of Chelsea with just seven games of the season to play.
As such, there have been many thrilled Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are confident that their side have now secured Champions League football next season, which would be their third successive campaign in Europe’s elite competition.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a summer move for Ajax centre-back Matthijs de Ligt.
And while the 18-year-old is extremely highly rated, his lack of experience in English football is of concern to some Tottenham fans lining up at the bar, who would prefer their side to forget about the Dutchman and instead target a move for £13.5 million-rated Harry Maguire (as per Transfermarkt) as a replacement for wantaway star Toby Alderweireld.
Ultimately, 25-year-old Maguire has enjoyed a fine season since his summer move from Hull City, with the England international starting all 31 of the Foxes’ Premier League matches this term, in which time he has scored two goals and laid on three assists.
Significantly, the centre-back has staked a serious claim for Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in summer, and actually looks set for a starting role alongside John Stones as part of the back three such have been his impressive efforts for Claude Puel’s Leicester this term.
Suddenly, the £17 million the Midlands outfit spent on the defender over the summer is looking like an absolute bargain, with Maguire proving to be an excellent all round centre-back at Premier League level, be it marking and thwarting some of the division’s best attackers, or calmly bringing the ball out of defence.
Clearly, the 25-year-old looks set for an extremely bright few years in the Premier League, and as such could be the perfect replacement for Alderweireld at Spurs, what with the Belgium international likely to leave the club this summer with just a year left on his contract.
The 29-year-old has been one of the best defenders in the division in the last few years but has struggled to regain his place in the side ahead of Davinson Sanchez, who could well partner Maguire in the heart of Pochettino’s backline for many years to come – they’d be a formidable partnership.
So while de Ligt is set for a huge future in the game, in terms of an immediate replacement for Alderweireld, Maguire would be a better option given his impressive efforts in the last year or so, alongside his suitability and proven qualities in the Premier League.
