Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side reach the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the second season in a row following a routine 3-0 win over Swansea City last weekend.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men found the going tough in reaching the last eight of the world’s oldest club competition, what with Spurs needing replays against both Newport County and Rochdale in the preceding rounds. Yet there were no problems for the North London club in South Wales on Saturday as a Christian Eriksen brace alongside Erik Lamela’s second of the campaign secured a comfortable victory for Spurs, thus setting up a meeting with Manchester United in the last four next month.
As such, there have been many buoyant Tottenham fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom are sincerely hoping their team can go on to win the FA Cup this season and thus end a decade-long wait for some silverware.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a summer move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans.
And while the 30-year-old would undoubtedly be a useful addition to Pochettino’s squad, they should forget about a move for Evans, and instead be bold and target Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated centre-back Jonathan Tah.
Ultimately, the 22-year-old is developing into one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga since making the move to Leverkusen back in 2015, with the youngster going on to make 99 appearances for the club, 28 of which have come this term in their run to fifth place in the German top-flight.
In fact, Tah is so highly rated that he already has three caps under his belt for World Cup winners Germany, and although he has missed out on selection for this week’s friendlies with Spain and Brazil, there’s little doubting that the 22-year-old has a huge future on both the club and international stage.
Importantly though, even at the tender age of 22, Tah already looks to have all the traits to go on and become one of the best centre-backs in European football.
The German is incredibly strong in the air yet has pace in abundance, while he is extremely calm and composed on the ball – all of which combine to make the perfect modern-day centre-half, and all at the age of 22.
And the defender simply must be of interest to Pochettino, as Tah would be a player for the present and indeed the future – in fact, Spurs have already been linked with a move for the German.
Whereas Evans is 30 and as such there wouldn’t be a nod to the future were he to sign, the opposite is true of Tah, who at 22 could be the mainstay of that Spurs backline for several years to come.
Yes, the centre-back penned a new contract at Leverkusen earlier this season and as such he wouldn’t come cheap, but there’s little doubting that he is set to go on and become an outstanding defender – he is already well on his way to doing so.
So while Evans has vast amounts of experience in the Premier League, and £3 million would be a bargain, Pochettino should instead urge chairman Daniel Levy to be bold and invest in £22.5 million-rated Tah (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
