Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team secure a third successive top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 success over Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with the North East heavyweights just two points clear of fifth place Chelsea with two matches of the season remaining, and thus knowing that anything less than a win would pile the pressure on ahead of the final day of the season. Yet Spurs responded well and got the three points courtesy of Harry Kane’s strike, and coupled with Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town on Wednesday night, it was enough to seal their place in the Champions League for next season.
Subsequently, there have been many delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are absolutely thrilled with their side’s efforts in the league this term, and as such will be hoping they can finish the campaign on a high with victory over Leicester City on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Everton with a summer move for Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles.
Pochettino’s side have also been linked with the £6.3 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) in recent times, and it is they who the defender should seek to sign for this summer at the expense of Sam Allardyce’s Everton.
Ultimately, while first team football is likely at Goodison Park given their defensive struggles this season, the prospect of featuring on the European stage for an improving Tottenham team is sure to be of great interest to the 24-year-old.
Yes, Spurs remain trophyless under Pochettino but there is no doubt that they are heading in the right direction under his guidance, with another season of Champions League football to come after another solid league campaign.
Significantly, there could be an opening in the centre back department this summer given the uncertainty over the future of Toby Alderweireld, who could well leave the club given his contract expires in 2019, and as of yet no extension has been agreed.
Yes, the partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez has been impressive this term and will take something or someone special to gatecrash that, but everyone said the same about Sanchez when he arrived last summer given Alderweireld and Vertonghen’s formidable pairing.
And with Vertonghen not getting any younger at the age of 31, time is very much on Lascelles’ side, and where better to learn his trade and develop into a top-quality defender than under Pochettino at Tottenham.
The Argentine has a proven track-record of aiding the development of young English talent, with the likes of Kane, Dele Alli, and Eric Dier all earning regular football under the 46-year-old, and now very much regulars for both club and country.
The same could happen with Lascelles, and with the ingredients already there for the centre back to go on and become an outstanding Premier League defender, he surely will do just that under Pochettino’s stewardship at Spurs.
So while Everton wouldn’t be the worst destination for the 24-year-old, Tottenham currently provide him with greater opportunities at European level, while they also have a manager who improves players, specifically young English players.
As such, Lascelles should forget about Everton, as he’d clearly be better served moving to North London.
