According to a recent report from Sky Sports, Tottenham are interested in a move for midfielder Florian Grillitsch. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim and has done so since leaving fellow German club Werder Bremen back in 2017, with his impressive efforts in the heart of the midfield seemingly attracting the interest of Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.
And with Mousa Dembele reportedly on his way out of the North London outfit this month, Pochettino is reportedly eyeing up Grillitsch as his successor, although the Argentine should forget about the Austria international, as the perfect replacement for Dembele already plays in the Premier League in the form of Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Ultimately, at the tender age of 23, Grillitsch clearly has a very bright future in the game such have been his efforts for Hoffenheim in recent years, not least last term in netting once and laying on three assists in 25 league games to help the club finish third in the Bundesliga.
And with appearances in all but three of their league matches this time round as well, it’s clear just how vital the Austrian is to Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann, and as such highlights how much of an asset he could prove to be to Pochettino at Tottenham.
However, there may be some concerns about his suitability to the Premier League having not played in English football before, which is something that Doucoure has under his belt after two-and-a-half seasons at Watford – and in that time, the 26-year-old has proven to be a hugely accomplished Premier League midfielder, and the ideal one to replace Dembele at Spurs.
The former France Under-21 international made the move to Vicarage Road back in 2016 as a relative unknown after coming up through the ranks at Rennes, but he soon went about making a name for himself with several dominating displays for the Hornets in the middle of the park.
The 26-year-old appeared 20 times in his first season in Hertfordshire as the club finished 17th in the Premier League under Walter Mazzarri, but it was the season after under a combination of Marco Silva and Javi Gracia in which he really came to the fore, appearing in all but one of their 37 league games, in which time he netted seven goals and laid on four assists.
And with appearances in all 21 of their Premier League matches this term under Gracia, in which time Doucoure has scored three goals and laid on five assists, it’s clear that the Frenchman continues to go from strength to strength – but it’s not just his attacking contributions which have caught the eye.
Not only does the 26-year-old evidently have great ability on the ball in getting forward and creating opportunities, but he has the strength and tenacity off it as well to break up play and screen the Watford backline – ultimately, his box-to-box ability is very similar to that of Dembele.
And having proven his worth in the Premier League, with it arguable that he is still improving and developing, the Frenchman appears to be the perfect fit for a Spurs team in need of greater industry and presence in the middle of the park.
So while Grillitsch looks set to embark on a successful career, the perfect Dembele replacement is already playing in the Premier League in the form of Watford’s Doucoure.
