Forget Kenedy: Tottenham should seek to land his £6.3m-rated Newcastle teammate instead

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much relishing their team’s clash with Premier League champions-elect Manchester City later on today, what with Spurs going into the clash having won their last six matches on the spin.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men sit fourth in the table and ten points clear of fifth place Chelsea heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures, having beaten Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Stoke City to win their last six league games. And our resident Spurs fans are particularly positive ahead this evening’s encounter, given that Pep Guardiola’s City have lost each of their last three matches in all competitions.

As such, there are many optimistic Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are confident that their team can inflict a fourth successive defeat on the Citizens when they visit Wembley this evening, at the same time avenging their crushing 4-1 defeat to the North West outfit back in December.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Chelsea star Kenedy, who is currently on loan at Newcastle.

And while the 22-year-old would certainly be a useful addition to Pochettino’s squad, the North London outfit should instead seek to land his £6.3 million-rated Newcastle teammate Jamaal Lascelles (as per Transfermarkt).

Ultimately, the 24-year-old has been outstanding in the heart of the Magpies backline this term, bagging three crucial goals in 27 Premier League appearances for Rafa Benitez’s side, and very much leading by example.

Be it last-ditch tackles in his own box to netting important goals at the other, the Newcastle captain has very much proven his worth to the North East giants this season, with Lascelles likely to play a key part in their quest to avoid the drop in the final six games of the season.

And at the tender age of 24, and having already proven his top-flight credentials, he could have a huge future in the Premier League, which is sure to be of interest to Spurs boss Pochettino.

Ultimately, Tottenham look set to lose influential centre-back Toby Alderweireld this summer, what with the Belgium international out of contract in 2019, and as of yet to agree an extension to that deal.

Yet the 29-year-old has been one of the best defenders in the Premier League in recent seasons and will undoubtedly be a big loss to the North London outfit, even if he hasn’t featured as regularly as he would have hoped in recent times such has been Davinson Sanchez’s excellent form.

Clearly though, Spurs will be looking for their next quality centre-half at this level to partner Sanchez in the years to come, and Lascelles very much looks to be that man.

At 24 years of age, he has led a massive club brilliantly this season and has dealt with the weight of expectation impeccably to suggest that he could well flourish at a top six side.

And with Tottenham possibly planning for life after Alderweireld, the Newcastle skipper could be the ideal signing this summer, which means they should opt against Kenedy and instead seek to land his Magpies teammate.
