Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are still disappointed following last week’s defeat to Manchester United which saw them crash out of the FA Cup, but they got back on track against Watford this evening.
Spurs now face a battle to finish in the top four with Chelsea breathing down their necks in fifth place. Mauricio Pochettino’s men know their fate is in their own hands with four games remaining in the Premier League.
With a new stadium in the offing, money must also be put into the transfer budget if Spurs are to challenge for the title next year. Funds will also be made available by offloading some fringe players with Inter Milan reportedly interested in winger Erik Lamela (as per Tuttosport via talkSPORT).
Regardless of whether Lamela departs, Pochettino should aim to strengthen his right side with the signing of Bayer Leverkusen sensation – Leon Bailey. Signed from Genk for £12m in January 2017, his value has rocketed to £40.5m according to Transfermarkt following a magnificent season.
The Jamaican winger has netted nine goals and notched six assists in 28 Bundesliga appearances as well as scoring three goals in four during the German Cup. His excellent form has seen him linked with some of Europe’s biggest names though developing him in north London could prove the best decision for all, particularly considering Mauricio Pochettino’s track record when it comes to working with burgeoning talents.
Bailey creates significantly more chances per 90 minutes (1.81) than Lamela (0.67), according to Squawka, which could see Harry Kane net even more goals. The 20-year-old has also averaged more successful take-ons, key passes and shots on target than the Argentine.
Landing one of Europe’s hottest prospects would be a huge statement of intent from the Lilywhites and add a world-class option to their forward line. Spurs would have to be considered title contenders if Bailey joins in the summer.
