The Tottenham fans are feeling confident in the Transfer Tavern ahead of their side’s FA Cup replay against Rochdale this evening, but they are concerned that Fernando Llorente will be handed another starting berth by Mauricio Pochettino.
The 33-year-old striker has managed to score just two goals from 26 appearances for The Lilywhites this season, and although the supporters are trying to exert patience with the Spaniard, his performances are giving them little reason to trust he will improve. The fact Llorente is 33-years-old certainly does not aid his cause, as regression rather than progression is more likely to occur in a player of his age.
Pochettino opted to hand Llorente a starting berth against Rochdale at Spotland in the first encounter between the two sides, but the level of his performance was far below what the fans have come to expect from their attacking players this season. With that being said, Pochettino should consider dropping Llorente this evening and instead hand a rare first-team opportunity to Kazaiah Sterling.
The 19-year-old English striker has made just 1 appearance for the first-team this season, as he came off the bench to replace Dele Alli for the final moments of the game against APOEL Nicosia back in December.
However, his form for Tottenham’s youth team this season suggests he is more than ready for a step up in class, and considering the shortcomings of Llorente, tonight represents an ideal opportunity to gently break him into the senior squad. Sterling has 11 goals and 3 assists from 25 appearances at youth level this season, including goals against Dortmund and Real Madrid in the UEFA Youth League.
Tottenham are set to face huge encounters both domestically and in Europe during the next 7 days, so Pochettino will certainly be looking to rest Kane tonight. Although Llorente is the natural replacement for Kane, his form in recent weeks suggests Tottenham have nothing to lose by boosting Kazaiah Sterling to the first-team this evening.
