Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to their team’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday, as Spurs seek to take a step closer to ending their decade-long wait for some silverware.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men haven’t lifted a trophy since winning the League Cup back in 2008, while the last time they reached the FA Cup final was back when they last won the competition, a 2-1 success over Nottingham Forest back in 1991. Nonetheless, the North London outfit have got past AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, Rochdale, and Swansea City to reach the last four of this year’s competition, and will very much be confident of getting past Jose Mourinho’s United at the national stadium this weekend.
Thus, many of our resident Spurs supporters are sincerely hoping that their side can finally bring to an end a barren spell without a trophy by going on to win the FA Cup this season, although United, Chelsea, and Southampton may well have something to say about those hopes.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Tottenham fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for Leicester City defender Harry Maguire.
And while the 25-year-old would undoubtedly be a useful addition to Pochettino’s squad, the North London club should forget about a move for the Englishman, and instead seek to land his £16.2 million-rated Leicester teammate Wilfred Ndidi (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, Spurs are reportedly willing to cash in on midfielder Mousa Dembele this summer, what with the 30-year-old out of contract in 2019 – as such, Pochettino’s side could well be short in the middle of park heading into the new season.
Yet Ndidi has proven in his short time at Leicester that he could be the ideal man to fill that role in Pochettino’s midfield, what with the 21-year-old having made more tackles than anybody else in the Premier League this season, and possessing an incredible work-ethic to get around the midfield, a la N’Golo Kante.
But with four assists for Claude Puel’s Foxes this season, the Nigeria international also possesses good ability on the ball as well, thus bringing together all the facets of a successful central midfielder, much like Spurs’ Dembele.
And at the tender age of 21, he could develop into one of the best midfielders in the division under Pochettino, who has a track record of giving young players the chance in the first team, and thus developing them into much better players.
Yes, Maguire’s addition would be a good one, and Toby Alderweireld does look set to leave this summer, but in Jan Vertonghen and the hugely impressive Davinson Sanchez, it’s arguable that a replacement for Dembele is more important than one for his compatriot Alderweireld.
As such, the North London outfit should forget about a move for Maguire, and instead target his Leicester teammate Ndidi instead.
