Forget Man City: £22.5m-rated sensation would be better served opting for Tottenham this summer

Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team secure a third successive top four finish in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Wednesday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Magpies at Wembley just two points clear of fifth place Chelsea with two games to play, and thus under pressure to deliver a performance and a result against the North East giants. And the North Londoners responded as a Harry Kane strike in the second half was enough to clinch all three points for Spurs, which coupled with Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town was enough to secure a third straight top four finish for Pochettino’s team.

As such, there have been several buoyant and thrilled Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are looking forward to another season of Champions League football, in which they will hope to build upon this term’s last-16 effort with an improved run next time round.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that target Matthijs de Ligt is seeking a move away from Ajax this summer.

But with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City also thought to be keen on the £22.5 million-rated sensation (as per Transfermarkt), it won’t be easy for Spurs to clinch a deal, although de Ligt himself should opt for the North Londoners over the Premier League champions.

Ultimately, it appears that Citizens chief Guardiola already has his future centre back partnership sorted in the form of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte, what with the duo 23 years of age and having cost over £100 million between them.

England international Stones may have struggled recently for regular football, but he played a key part in establishing City’s dominance in the first half of the season, while Laporte has looked the part since his arrival in January with several impressive performances.

Thus, it’s difficult to see how 18-year-old de Ligt fits in at City ahead of the aforementioned duo, whereas things look a lot clearer under Pochettino at Tottenham.

Captain Toby Alderweireld looks set to leave the club this summer given the ongoing situation surrounding his contract, and with compatriot and fellow centre back Jan Vertonghen not getting any younger at the age of 31, opportunities, both in the short and long term, could be in the offing for de Ligt in North London.

And alongside former Ajax teammate Davinson Sanchez, who has hugely impressed at Spurs since his move last summer, the 18-year-old could help to form a formidable partnership in the heart of Pochettino’s backline for many years to come.

Add in the Argentine’s incredible ability to aid and develop young players, as he has done with the likes of Kane, Dele Alli, and Eric Dier during his time at Tottenham, and de Ligt is only going to get better under Pochettino’s guidance, and indeed playing regular football.

And with the latter in greater doubt were he to move to City this summer given messrs Stones and Laporte, the 18-year-old sensation should seek to forget about the league champions and instead opt for Tottenham during the close season.
