Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating their team’s clash with Premier League champions-elect Manchester City on Saturday, what with Spurs going into the encounter having won their last six games.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men began their impressive run recent of form with a narrow 1-0 success over North London rivals Arsenal back on February 10, and they have since then added successes over Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Stoke City to sit pretty in fourth place in the table. And our resident Spurs fans are particularly intrigued by Saturday’s game given that Pep Guardiola’s City have lost each of their last three matches in all competitions.
As such, there are many positive and optimistic Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom firmly believe that their team can avenge their 4-1 hammering at the hands of the Citizens back in December with victory at Wembley on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that West Brom centre-back Jonny Evans is set to opt for Man City this summer.
Yet with Pochettino’s Tottenham also thought to be keen on the 30-year-old, he should forget about a move to the Etihad Stadium, as Spurs appears to be the perfect destination for the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, Guardiola is not short of quality centre-back options at City, what with the likes of Nicolas Otamendi, Vincent Kompany, and John Stones performing well over the course of the campaign – the former in particular has been outstanding.
And the January addition of Aymeric Laporte has further bolstered those ranks, not just for the present but also for the future, what with messrs Laporte and Stones both at the tender age of 23.
Yes, Kompany’s fitness may be of concern to Guardiola, but from Evans’ point of view, it’s difficult to see how he’d get in ahead of the other three, especially given that City shelled out £47.5 million on Stones and £57 million on Laporte.
However, there could be an opening at Tottenham given that the future of Toby Alderweireld is far from certain, what with the defender out of contract in the 2019 and has yet to agree an extension.
The 29-year-old has been one of the division’s best centre-backs in the last few years but has found gametime hard to come by since his return from injury, with compatriot Jan Vertonghen and 21-year-old Davinson Sanchez keeping him out of the side.
Yet it is looking more and more likely that Alderweireld will indeed leave the club this summer, which would leave Pochettino short on centre-back options, even though Eric Dier is also accomplished at centre half.
And that is why Evans should seek to move to Tottenham.
While regular football can never be guaranteed, Alderweireld’s likely departure would surely give the 30-year-old a better chance of minutes at Spurs, whereas City are supremely well-stocked in that particular department.
As such, Evans should forget about a move to City, as Pochettino’s Tottenham appears to be the perfect destination for him to continue his Premier League career.
