Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are sincerely hoping that chairman Daniel Levy gives manager Mauricio Pochettino the funds to go out and improve the squad this summer ahead of the 2018/19 season.
The North Londoners sealed a third successive top four finish in the Premier League this time round to secure another season of Champions League football, eventually ending up seven points clear of fifth place Chelsea. However, Spurs never threatened champions Manchester City in the race for the title, and as such our resident Tottenham fans are hoping that money will be made available for Pochettino to build a side capable of challenging next season.
Yet one former target that could slip by the wayside this summer is Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez, with recent reports suggesting that a deal to take him to Pep Guardiola’s City is close.
However, given the huge amount of competition for places at the Etihad Stadium, the £45 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) should forget about a move to City, as Tottenham appears to be the perfect destination for the 27-year-old.
Ultimately, in Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling, Guardiola has two of the most impressive forwards in the Premier League, with the duo scoring a staggering 37 goals and laying on 36 assists between them in all competitions this season.
Add in the likes of Bernardo Silva, and indeed the hugely influential pairing of Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, and it’s difficult to see where Mahrez fits in, with his figures last term inferior to the aforementioned City quintet.
However, first team opportunities may be more forthcoming at Pochettino’s Tottenham, as although Dele Alli, Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen have enjoyed fine seasons in North London, those behind them in the pecking order haven’t hugely excelled.
Erik Lamela has struggled to get back to his best since returning from a year out with a hip problem, and has subsequently been linked with a move away this summer, while January signing Lucas Moura hasn’t been afforded much of a chance in the first team, for one reason or another.
And given Mahrez’s fine efforts for Leicester in the last few years, not least in inspiring them to the Premier League title back in 2016, he would certainly give the current Spurs wingers something to think about.
The Algeria international is able to conjure something up out of very little, be it from open play or a set play, and that trait appears to have been missing from Tottenham in recent times, not least in the big matches when they seek to unpick opposition backlines.
Clearly, Mahrez is one of the best attackers outside of the top six in the Premier League, and would stand a greater chance of getting into Tottenham’s first team than he would City’s – and at the age of 27, first team football is imperative for a player likely to be in his peak years in the coming few seasons.
As such, the Algerian should forget about a move to the champions, as Tottenham appears to be the perfect destination for him this summer.
