Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side take a step closer to a Premier League top four finish courtesy of a 2-1 success at Stoke City on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with the relegation-threatened Potters sat fourth in the table and eight points clear of fifth-place Chelsea, thus very much likely to bring a third season of Champions League football to North London. And Spurs strengthened their grip on a top four place on Saturday as a Christian Eriksen brace either side of Mame Biram Diouf’s equaliser secured all three points for Pochettino’s side, in turn moving them ten points clear of Antonio Conte’s Blues after they could only manage a 1-1 draw with West Ham.
Subsequently, there have been many buoyant Tottenham fans in the Tavern this week, several of whom reckon that the race for the top four is now over, and as such they expect their club to playing host to Champions League football again next season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a move for Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand.
Manchester United, among others, are also thought to be interested in the £18 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), yet the England international should opt for Pochettino’s Tottenham this summer.
Ultimately, there is much uncertainty surrounding the future of current Spurs left back Danny Rose, pretty much ever since he did an interview with The Sun last summer in which he was critical of Tottenham’s transfer policy, and very much opened himself up to a move in the future.
Yet the England international has struggled for regular football in North London this season after coming back from injury, with Welshman Ben Davies very much doing his bit in keeping Rose out of the side with several impressive displays for Pochettino’s side.
However, there are still some concerns among our resident Tottenham fans over whether Davies can be the longer term solution at left back, but those such concerns aren’t had with Bertrand.
The 28-year-old may not be embarking on his best season at Southampton this term, but one mustn’t forget the numerous amount of high-level displays he has produced for the club in recent years, to the point that he has overtaken Rose as England’s number one choice left back.
And with a possible opening at Tottenham in the left back department, what with Rose likely on his way (possibly to United), Bertrand may view Spurs as the perfect destination for his next move.
And with Pochettino clearly able to get the best out of English players, what with Dele Alli, Eric Dier, and Harry Kane playing a significant part in their success in recent times, as have Rose and now Manchester City star Kyle Walker, there’s no doubt that Bertrand can go on to become an even better defender under the Argentine’s guidance.
And as part of a side praised for playing fast-flowing attacking football, the 28-year-old could be in his element down the left flank, be it as a more conventional full back, or indeed as a wing back – there are exciting times to come at Spurs.
Thus, the former Chelsea man should opt against a move to other reported suitors this summer in favour of linking up with Pochettino at Tottenham.
