Tottenham supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side all but seal a place in the Premier League’s top four courtesy of a 2-1 win at Stoke City.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their encounter with the relegation-threatened Potters having won five successive league games, thus moving a healthy eight points clear of fifth place Chelsea. And Spurs tightened their grip on a top four place on Saturday as a Christian Eriksen brace either side of Mame Biram Diouf’s equaliser sealed all three points for Pochettino’s men, which coupled with Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with West Ham saw the North London outfit move ten points clear of the Blues in the race for Champions League football.
Thus, there have been many buoyant Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are supremely confident that their team will indeed play in Europe’s elite competition for a third successive campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that their club are interested in a move for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial.
And while there’s little doubting that the 22-year-old would be a useful addition to Pochettino’s side, they should forget about a move for the Frenchman, and instead seek to land his £13.5 million-rated United teammate Luke Shaw (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the 22-year-old has endured a testing time since moving to Old Trafford back in 2014, with a broken leg back in 2015 and a seemingly strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho contributing to his struggles in the North West.
There have been some bright moments for the England international, but on the whole it has been a disappointing time for the left back, who looks likely to leave United this summer in a bid to resurrect his career.
And he should do just that at Tottenham under a manager whom he played the best football of his career to date.
Shaw earned the big money move to United as a result of his efforts under Pochettino’s guidance at Southampton, and were he able to replicate that again at Spurs, the North London club would have a very fine left back on their books.
And with speculation mounting over Danny Rose’s future, pretty much ever since he did an interview with The Sun during the summer, Pochettino may well need his next long-term left back, and who better than someone tipped by many to go on and become his country’s next best left back a matter of years ago.
And while it may feel as though the defender has been around a while now, he is still only 22 and very much has a huge future in the game, although one senses that the next few years, specifically his next destination, will go some way to determining how much of that undoubted potential he goes on to fulfil.
As such, while Martial would certainly bolster their attacking ranks going into the 2018/19 season, Tottenham simply must forget about the France international and instead opt for his United teammate Shaw instead.
