Tottenham supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their side suffer a second successive FA Cup semi-final defeat courtesy of a 2-1 loss to Manchester United on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their meeting with the North West giants having knocked out AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, Rochdale, and Swansea City en route to the last four, the stage they reached last term before running into Antonio Conte’s Chelsea. And they have again fallen at the semi-final hurdle despite taking the lead on Saturday through Dele Alli, with goals from Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera securing a deserved win for the Red Devils, who advance to next month’s final.
As such, there have been many frustrated Tottenham supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can at least finish the season strongly in a bid to build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for winger Gelson Martins this summer.
And while the 22-year-old would likely be a useful addition to Pochettino’s squad, they should forget about him and instead seek to lure £22.5 million-rated Wilfried Zaha (as per Transfermarkt) to North London.
Ultimately, while Sporting Lisbon’s Martins has enjoyed a fine season in netting 13 goals and laying on 12 assists for the Portuguese heavyweights, he has never played in the Premier League before, and with Tottenham seeking to compete for major honours next season, they surely need players who can come in and hit the ground running.
As such, there are doubts over whether Martins would be able to do that, yet those doubts aren’t present regarding Crystal Palace’s Zaha.
The 25-year-old has without doubt been one of the best attackers outside of the Premier League’s top six in the last few years, scoring seven goals and laying on four assists in 26 appearances this term to help Roy Hodgson’s men to 16th place in the table.
And following his heroics last time round, in which he scored seven times and laid on 11 assists in inspiring the Eagles to survival, the Ivory Coast international has certainly proven his credentials in English football, and is arguably the man oppositions seek to stop whenever they face Palace.
And with Spurs arguably in need of the flair and creativity Zaha possesses, it’s a move they have to get done this summer.
Pochettino’s men were bereft of ideas in the second half against United on Saturday – they could have been there another hour and they probably wouldn’t have scored.
And while Alli, Christian Eriksen, and co are all hugely talented players, it may have required someone direct and pacey like Zaha to get at and run at the Red Devils backline – clearly, he’d be a great option to have in the Spurs squad.
And with question marks over how well Martins would adapt to English football, the North London side should forget about the 22-year-old and instead focus their efforts on luring the proven Zaha to the club this summer.
