Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing their side’s meeting with Premier League champions-elect Manchester City this weekend, what with Spurs heading into the clash having won each of their past six league games.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are sat fourth in the division and ten points clear of fifth place Chelsea after picking up 18 points from a possible 18, recording victories over Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth, Chelsea, and Stoke City to all but seal another season of Champions League football. And our resident Spurs fans are very much looking forward to Saturday’s meeting at Wembley given that the Citizens have lost each of their last three games in all competitions.
Subsequently, there are many optimistic Tottenham fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are confident that their side can indeed avenge their 4-1 hammering at the hands of Pep Guardiola’s men back in December with all three points on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a move for West Ham left back Arthur Masuaku.
And while the 24-year-old would likely be a good addition to Pochettino’s squad, they should forget about the Hammers man and instead focus their efforts on luring £22.5 million-rated wonderkid Ryan Sessegnon (as per Transfermarkt) to North London.
Ultimately, the 17-year-old has had a meteoric rise in the last couple of years, with the England youth international going from a relative unknown in the summer of 2016 to one of the hottest properties in the EFL less than two years later.
And that has all come about as a result of his remarkable performances for Slavisa Jokanovic’s Fulham, with the youngster netting five times last season for the Cottagers in their run to the Championship play-off semi-finals, before significantly bettering it this time round with 14 goals and six assists in 42 league appearances.
And form like that is not going to go unnoticed, with Spurs one of several top sides reportedly keeping tabs on Sessegnon ahead of a possible move this summer. And it’s a move they should make.
Given how good the 17-year-old already appears to be, be it at left back or wing back, or indeed slightly further up the pitch like in recent times, it’s frightening how good he could become under the stewardship of Pochettino.
The Argentine’s track record of giving young players a chance and thus developing them has been well documented over the years, with the case of Dele Alli a particularly pertinent one given he took arguably the best player in League One at the time, and turned him into a Spurs and England regular.
The likes of Eric Dier and Harry Kane, and indeed Luke Shaw at Southampton, have all hugely benefited from Pochettino’s guidance in recent years to become quality footballers, and at the tender age of 17, the same would surely happen with Sessegnon were he to move to Tottenham.
Clearly, the Fulham wonderkid is destined for great things in the game, and while Masuaku has proven his worth to West Ham in the Premier League in recent times, and may well be a safer bet, Sessegnon’s potential is enormous, with many in the Tavern of the opinion that he could already do a job in the top-flight.
As such, Spurs must forget about a move for West Ham’s Masuaku, and instead seek to win the race for 17-year-old Sessegnon.
