Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been using the last couple of days to look back at their side’s solid campaign so far, and indeed ahead to what could be in store for their team between now and the end of the season.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are in pole position to qualify for the Champions League for a third successive campaign, having finished runners-up to champions Chelsea last time round and indeed third the season before. However, the 2017/18 campaign will end trophyless for the North Londoners, what with Pochettino’s side bowing out of the Champions League against Juventus back in March, and having come up short in both of the domestic cup competitions.
As such, while there are many satisfied Tottenham fans in the Tavern, some are frustrated that their team will not end their long wait for a trophy this term, with it now over a decade since they lifted the League Cup in 2008.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Spurs supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a summer move for Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson.
And while the 24-year-old would likely be a useful addition to Pochettino’s squad, the North London outfit should forget about him and instead seek to lure reported target Jamaal Lascelles to the club.
Ultimately, the Newcastle United captain has enjoyed a magnificent campaign in the heart of Rafa Benitez’s backline, appearing in 31 of their 36 Premier League matches this term, only missing the other five as a result of injury.
And with several crucial blocks and interceptions in his own box, alongside some vital goals at the other end, the Englishman has played a key part in keeping the Magpies in the Premier League, very much leading by example and dealing with the pressure of playing for a huge club with a huge fanbase.
And at the tender age of 24, it’s clear that Lascelles has a massive future in the game and could well go on and become a top-quality centre back, but significantly his ability to deal and indeed respond to the pressure of being the Newcastle captain stands him in good stead for the future.
In particular, it stands him in good stead were he to move to a top six club any time in the future, and that must be of interest to Spurs boss Pochettino, who appears to be on the lookout for a centre back this summer given the likelihood that Toby Alderweireld will leave the club.
And while Lascelles is arguably not yet at the level of the Belgium international, there’s no reason why he won’t be one day, with it disputable, despite getting the nod for England in their most recent internationals, whether Mawson is actually any better than his compatriot.
And with Swansea reportedly holding for around £40 million for the 24-year-old, Spurs may well be able to get Lascelles slightly cheaper – a better defender for cheaper appears to be a no-brainer.
As such, the North London club should forget about Mawson and instead seal a deal for £6.3 million-rated Lascelles (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
