Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the remainder of the summer transfer window following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has penned a new long-term deal with the North Londoners.
The Argentine took over at Spurs back in 2014 after impressing during a short stint at Southampton, and he has since turned Tottenham into one of the best teams in the country with three successive top four finishes in the Premier League. And while the 46-year-old has yet to deliver a trophy during his three-and-a-half-year spell in North London, several of our resident Spurs fans are convinced that he is the man to do just that in the near future.
As such, those Tottenham fans lining up at the bar will be expecting some signings during the summer transfer market, and one man who could be on his way to the club is Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, as per recent reports from The Daily Mirror.
Yet Spurs should be eyeing up reinforcements that can improve the starting eleven, and with Hugo Lloris the undisputed number one at the club, Pochettino’s side should forget about McCarthy and instead target his £13.5 million-rated Southampton teammate Mario Lemina (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, there is much speculation surrounding the future of two of Spurs’ most integral central midfielders, with Mousa Dembele increasingly likely to leave the club this summer given his contract situation, while Victor Wanyama has also been linked with a move away given his struggles for regular football.
And were both, or even one, of the midfield duo to leave this summer, Pochettino would be left short in the middle of the park, which is why a move for Lemina, who enjoyed an impressive first season at Southampton, should take precedence over one for McCarthy.
The 24-year-old only made the move to St Mary’s 12 months ago from Italian giants Juventus, and he showed his class for much of the 2017/18 season with 25 Premier League appearances for the Saints, in which time he earned many rave reviews.
Be it on the ball seeking to launch attacks and find the front men, or indeed off it in making crucial blocks and reading the game in the middle of the park, Lemina has got the potential to go on and become an excellent central midfielder at Premier League level, and one that as such could significantly benefit Spurs next season.
And while McCarthy deserves great credit for his efforts between the sticks at St Mary’s this term, he simply isn’t going to dispose Lloris of the number one jersey at the North London outfit, and as such wouldn’t be the signing that can take Pochettino’s side to the next level.
Lemina could be though given the uncertainly and possible departures of messrs Dembele and Wanyama this summer, which is why Spurs would be better served targeting the Saints midfielder as opposed to his teammate McCarthy this summer.
