According to a recent report from France Football, Tottenham are interested in a move for Adrien Rabiot in this month’s transfer window. The 23-year-old currently plays his football at Ligue 1 heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain having come up through the ranks in the French capital, although with his contract up at the end of the current season, his future at the Parc des Princes is far from certain.
And a recent report from France Football suggests that Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs are eyeing up a move for the contract rebel this month, likely as a replacement for the recently-departed Mousa Dembele, yet the North Londoners should forget about Rabiot, as the perfect replacement for the Belgian is already at the club in the form of Harry Winks.
Ultimately, the departure of 31-year-old Dembele to the Chinese Super League earlier this month has left Pochettino with quite the void in the middle of his Tottenham midfield, what with the Belgium international proving to be one of the most accomplished central midfielders in the Premier League during his time at the North London outfit.
Yes, injuries certainly prevented him from racking up more appearances and thus having an even greater influence on Pochettino’s team, but he still played a big part in helping Spurs become one of the best sides in English football – it’s no coincidence that their best league finish of second in 2017 was when Dembele combined brilliantly with Victor Wanyama in the middle of the park.
However, it is now up to Pochettino to find the ideal man to replace the 31-year-old, with PSG’s Rabiot certainly a contender for the role given his central midfield ability, alongside the fact that he is almost certainly on his way out of the French champions this year.
The 23-year-old is out of contract at the Parc des Princes and doesn’t appear even close to penning a new deal with Thomas Tuchel’s side, as underlined by the fact that he has been a peripherical figure at the club in the last few weeks.
Yet he has shown during his time in the French capital to have all the hallmarks to be a hugely accomplished central midfielder, be it quality on the ball in retaining possession under pressure and launching attacks, or indeed off it in making key tackles and interceptions to break play up in the centre of the pitch.
However, Spurs fans are likely to be concerned with just how easily he has fallen out with PSG in recent times – add that to the fact that 22-year-old Winks has certainly come of age in recent times, and the ideal Dembele replacement appears to already be at Tottenham.
The Englishman began to make a name for himself in the 2017/18 season but saw injury stem his progress in the second half of the campaign, only for the midfielder to bide his time and wait for an opportunity that was always likely to be presented by Pochettino – and he has certainly taken it in recent months.
And that’s because the three-times England international has made a midfield spot his own in the last few months in starting eight of Tottenham’s last nine Premier League matches, in which time he has shone in the centre of the pitch to help the club to seven wins in that time.
Be it showing tenacity off the ball in winning back possession, or indeed making a lung-busting run to net the winner against Fulham at the weekend, Winks has shown everyone exactly what he can do in the middle of the park – his ability on the ball in particular is without question.
And with injuries continuing to decimate the midfield area, the 22-year-old looks set for even more playing time over the coming weeks, in which time he is sure to further underline his capabilities in the midfield role – he appears to be getting better and better.
And with Pochettino needing to fill the void left by the influential Dembele, he need not look at PSG’s Rabiot, with the ideal replacement for the Belgian already at Tottenham in the form of Winks.
