Tottenham supporters have been somewhat frustrated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side only muster a 2-2 draw away at League One bottom club Rochdale in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Sunday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the third tier strugglers off the back of drawing 2-2 with Juventus in midweek, thus setting them up as favourites to progress to the last eight of the Champions League when the two sides meet in little over two weeks’ time. Yet they will face another FA Cup replay against lower league opposition as Steve Davis’ 93rd minute equaliser secured a deserved draw for Dale, with goals from Lucas Moura and Harry Kane looking to have got the job done for Spurs following Ian Henderson’s opener for Keith Hill’s side.
Thus, there have been many frustrated Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can get back to winning ways when they travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Spurs supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that they are eyeing up a double swoop on Watford for Abdoulaye Doucoure and Richarlison.
And while the former would be a very good addition, they should forget about making a move for Brazilian youngster Richarlison, and instead focus their efforts on luring Wilfried Zaha to North London.
Ultimately, Watford’s Richarlison made a wonderful start to life in English football with five goals and five assists in his first 17 Premier League appearances, helping the Hornets to the security of mid-table at Christmas.
Yet the 20-year-old has since failed to register a goal or an assist in his succeeding ten league games, calling into question his capabilities and whether or not his first few months were indeed a fluke.
And it’s this level of consistency which must worry Pochettino and the Spurs hierarchy, yet those worries cannot be expressed with regard to Palace’s Zaha.
The Ivory Coast international has proven his worth over the last few seasons in the Premier League, notably last term in which he scored seven goals and laid on 11 assists to play a huge part in keeping the Eagles in the top-flight.
And while this term’s figures aren’t quite as impressive, having scored just four goals and laid on two assists, injuries have played a part in that, yet the 25-year-old continues to carry a threat whenever he is on the pitch – the same cannot currently be said of Richarlison.
Ultimately, there’s a reason Spurs have been repeatedly linked with Zaha in the last few years. The former Manchester United forward has proven to be one of the best players in the lower reaches of the Premier League, and is beginning to find a level of consistency to his play.
Zaha’s own big-money move to United back in 2013, and subsequent struggles, could serve as a warning to Spurs about going after Richarlison so early in his career – he needs more time at Watford before they can be sure of his ability in the Premier League.
Yet Zaha is continuing to prove himself every week for Palace, and as such Pochettino’s side should forget about Richarlison and instead go after the £22.5 million-rated Ivorian (as per Transfermarkt) instead.
