Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team finish an ultimately successful Premier League campaign with a thrilling 5-4 win over Leicester City last weekend.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their final day encounter with the Foxes on Sunday having already secured a top four finish courtesy of victory over Watford a few days earlier, but at 3-1 down to Claude Puel’s Leicester last weekend, they looked set to end the campaign with defeat. However, the North Londoners produced an excellent second half display to seal all three points and thus clinch a third place finish in the Premier League, a third top three effort in succession.
Consequently, there have been several thrilled Spurs supporters in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are looking ahead to the summer and what business their side may seek to conduct, and as such are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking them with Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri.
And while the Switzerland international would likely be a useful addition to Pochettino’s squad, they should forget about the attacker and instead seek to lure his £16.2 million-rated Stoke teammate Jack Butland (as per Transfermarkt) to North London.
Ultimately, while Shaqiri would bring more flair and creativity to the Tottenham attacking ranks, he simply isn’t an upgrade on the current options in that position, which is what Spurs should be seeking this window if they are to indeed go on and challenge for major honours next time round.
Whereas Butland would certainly provide stiff competition for the number one jersey at the North London club, what with Hugo Lloris arguably having not been at his best in the last 12 months.
The Frenchman has made a few errors over the course of the season to call into question whether he remains the top-quality shot-stopper he has proven to be during his time at Spurs, with many in the Tavern wondering whether Pochettino needs to look towards a more long-term option.
And there’s little doubt that Butland could be that long-term option.
The England international, selected in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad last week, may have been part of a Stoke side relegated to the Championship this season, but he was without doubt a bright spark in an otherwise disastrious campaign for the Potters.
Arguably, it wasn’t for Butland’s efforts, most notably in matches against Arsenal and Southampton, Paul Lambert’s men would have been relegated much sooner than they were, thus raising the 25-year-old’s stock ten-fold to the point that he has been linked with a big move away this summer.
And with Lloris unconvincing for much of the campaign, Spurs should seek to bring Butland to the club in a bid to provide stiff competition for the Frenchman, which could thus bring the best out of the two of them.
As such, while Shaqiri would deepen Pochettino’s squad, Butland would be a possible starter – thus, there’s only one Stoke star Spurs should seek to land this summer.
