He’s the best in the league: Tottenham have every right to demand hefty fee for 29-year-old

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are sincerely hoping that their club give manager Mauricio Pochettino some money to spend this summer in a bid to bridge the gap between themselves and the top sides in Europe.

The North Londoners deserve huge credit for recording a third successive top four finish in the Premier League this term, with Spurs eventually ending up a healthy seven points clear of fifth place Chelsea. However, they finished 25 points adrift of champions Manchester City, and having failed to end their trophy drought in the Champions League or indeed the domestic cup competitions, our resident Tottenham fans are hoping to see their side move up another level next season.

Yet one man who is unlikely to be a part of that next time round is defender Toby Alderweireld, with reports in the last few months linking him with a move away such is his contract situation at Spurs.

However, recent reports suggest that Tottenham will hold out for £75 million for the 29-year-old, and while fans of other clubs in the Tavern are somewhat surprised by that figure, the North London outfit have every right to command such a fee for the influential ace.

Ultimately, there’s little doubting that Alderweireld is up there as one of the best if not the best centre backs in the Premier League, having helped lead Spurs to a third place finish back in 2016, and then improving to finish second last time round in 2017.

And in both of those campaigns, Pochettino’s men finished with the best defensive record, which is testament to the effect Alderweireld had on the backline, and indeed the partnership he struck up with compatriot Jan Vertonghen at the heart of the Spurs defence.

And while Alderweireld has struggled for form and fitness this time round, and summer signing Davinson Sanchez has made a fine start to life at the club, Tottenham will still miss the Belgium international were he to leave this summer – ultimately, any side in the country would miss a defender of that calibre.

And given the extortionate sums of money being banded about nowadays, both on players with great ability and those without, Spurs have every right to demand £75 million for the 29-year-old – after all, Liverpool bought Virgil van Dijk for £75 million back in January, and it’s up for debate whether he is actually better than Alderweireld.

And with Manchester United thought to be keen on the 29-year-old, a club that spent £90 million on Romelu Lukaku last summer and £89.2 million on Paul Pogba 12 months earlier, Spurs well be well aware that they have the money to match their price-tag.

Thus, given how excellent Alderweireld has been for Tottenham since his move there back in 2015, alongside how big a signing it would be for another side and how a big a loss it would be for themselves, Spurs have every right to command a hefty £75 million for his services.
