Imminent midfielder agreement is the most important deal Tottenham can strike this summer

Tottenham supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the remainder of the summer transfer window following the news that manager Mauricio Pochettino has penned a new long-term deal with the club.

The 46-year-old took over at Spurs back in 2014 after an impressive stint at Southampton, and he has since transformed the North Londoners into one of the best teams in the country, with this term their third successive finish in the Premier League’s top four. And while the Argentine has yet to win a trophy at the club, many of our resident Tottenham fans are sure that he is the man to end their long wait for some silverware in the near future.

However, for that to happen, it’s clear that signings are needed over the summer, although it’s just as important that they retain their most prized assets which is why reports that midfielder Christian Eriksen is ‘poised’ to sign a new deal are likely to be well received by Spurs fans lining up at the bar.

And were the Denmark international to indeed put pen-to-paper over a new contract at the club, it would represent the best deal the North London outfit can do this summer.

Ultimately, while the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli take the majority of the plaudits for Tottenham’s attacking play, much of what they do best comes through Eriksen, who has without doubt become one of the best attackers in the Premier League over the years.

The 26-year-old made the move to Tottenham back in 2013 and has since gone on to score 56 goals and lay on 69 assists for the club, 14 goals and 13 assists of which coming this term in their run to third place in the league, as well as the last-16 of the Champions League.

But for Spurs to push on next time round, not only are additions important, but so is retaining their most prized assets, of which there is no doubt that Eriksen is one.

The Danish ace created more chances than any other Tottenham player this season (88), which was 30 more than nearest challenger Alli, which means he has now topped that particular chart in each of his five full seasons in North London – clearly, he is the beating heart of the Spurs midfield.

As such, it remains to be seen whether Kane, Alli, and Son Heung-min, among others, would be as prolific in front of goal were Eriksen to be taken out of Pochettino’s starting eleven – his influence is that great, and thus his importance is that big to this Tottenham team.

Be it in open play dissecting opposition backlines with his incredible vision and weight of pass, or indeed on set plays at free kicks and corners producing a testing delivery, the 26-year-old has it all, and without doubt contributes heavily to how good Tottenham are in the attacking third of the pitch.

Thus, news that an agreement is imminent with Eriksen over a new deal will come as music to the ears of our resident Spurs fans, with an agreement with the Dane seemingly the most important deal the North Londoners can strike this summer.
