The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern were just so proud to see Harry Winks handed his England debut on Sunday, having watched the midfielder grow into a man of late.
Yet another talented member of Spurs’ academy given a chance under Mauricio Pochettino, the 21-year-old looked at home in the Three Lions’ midfield, much to the delight of our north London locals.
These days, Winks is a major part of the first-team set-up for Tottenham, which is why reports from the Daily Mail come as little surprise.
They claim the club rejected a loan offer from Ligue 1 side Nice last season as Pochettino looked to integrate the talented pass-master into his first eleven, despite the presence of Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele in central midfield berths.
Nice have been building an exciting squad over the last few seasons, one that includes the likes of Mario Balotelli and Wesley Snjeider, and reportedly identified borrowing Winks as a good on the Côte d’Azur.
However, it’s understood to have been rejected out of hand, much to the delight of the Spurs fans propping up our bar.
Yet another great move from Pochettino. With Winks recently becoming the 12th player to make his England debut while playing under his watch, the decision to keep him in and around Spurs’ starting XI is paying dividends for both club and country.
