Tottenham could be in the market for a new centre midfielder if Mousa Dembele leaves the club in January.

The Belgian midfielder has been a mainstay in the side during Mauricio Pochettino’s time with the club, but he has less than one year remaining on his current deal. Talks are yet to begin over a new contract and rumours continue to persist surrounding his future at the club. A move to China was mooted, but nothing has materialised thus far.

Inter Milan are also reportedly admirers of the Belgium international and could make their move in the January transfer window. Dembele featured against the Italian side during Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat and was arguably one of the best players on the field. The Serie A giants would have definitely been impressed with what they witnessed.

Should Dembele depart, Tottenham should launch an ambitious bid for Barcelona playmaker – Ivan Rakitic. Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, the Croatia international has blossomed into one of the world’s finest midfielders since joining the club from Sevilla back in 2014. Rakitic made 35 appearances in La Liga last season as Barcelona were crowned champions.

On the back of an impressive domestic campaign, the playmaker also helped Croatia reach the final of the 2018 World Cup. Despite his excellent showings, reports suggest Rakitic will not be rewarded with a new contract, plunging his future into doubt and putting Premier League clubs on red alert.

With Spurs not spending a penny in the summer transfer window, they could offer the 30-year-old the wages he wants and the chance to spearhead the side when they move into their new stadium. If he is available, Spurs simply must consider this ready-made Dembele replacement.
