Tottenham faced their toughest test of the season so far with Liverpool travelling to Wembley and smashing them to pieces.
The Reds have won all five of their opening fixtures in the Premier League and certainly avenged last season’s 4-1 drumming at the national stadium. Mauricio Pochettino was handed two injury blows ahead of the game with Dele Alli, and Hugo Lloris both ruled out through injury, so his task wasn’t easy.
Spurs didn’t sign a single player in the summer transfer window and speculation continues to surround the future of Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian was widely linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, before his £25m release clause kicks in.
With that in mind, the ideal replacement would be Napoli defender – Kalidou Koulibaly. Valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, the Senegal international has established himself as one of the best defenders in the world after becoming a mainstay in the Napoli side. The 27-year-old made 45 appearances in all competitions last season as Napoli narrowly missed out on the Serie A title.
Koulibaly would slot seamlessly into the Tottenham defence alongside Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez. He averaged 1.5 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game last season as well as winning 1.8 aerial duels, highlighting his defensive prowess (WhoScored). The defender is also a huge threat from set-pieces, scoring five goals in the Serie A last season – Inter Milan’s Stefan De Vrij was the only centre-back who scored more.
The former Genk man is still improving and approaching the prime of his career. Bringing Koulibaly to North London would help Tottenham fans quickly forget about Alderweireld.
