Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team book their place in the last four of the FA Cup for the second consecutive season courtesy of a routine 3-0 success over Swansea City on Saturday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men got past AFC Wimbledon, Newport County, and Rochdale en route to the quarter-finals of the world’s oldest club competition, although they certainly were made to sweat having been taken to a replay by the latter two EFL sides. Yet the result was never really in doubt in South Wales on Saturday as a Christian Eriksen double alongside Erik Lamela’s second of the season sealed a comfortable victory for the North London outfit, thus earning them a clash with Manchester United in the semi-finals next month.
Consequently, there have been many thrilled Spurs fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be interested by a recent report from HLN, which suggests that their club are open to selling defender Toby Alderweireld this summer, although hope to get ’50 million euros’ for the influential ace.
The 29-year-old’s contract situation has been in the headlines for a while now given that his current deal at Spurs expires in 2019, and while the club can trigger a one-year extension, doing so would reportedly bring a £25 million release clause into his contract.
As such, speculation has been building in recent times that Pochettino’s side could look to cash in on the influential ace this summer, with several fellow Premier League clubs such as Chelsea and Manchester United reportedly keeping tabs on the situation.
And this key development is sure to intrigue the likes of Chelsea and United, at the same time interesting and perhaps frustrating our resident Spurs fans given how impressive and important the £31.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) has been in recent years.
Landlord’s verdict: Toby Alderweireld has struggled with injury for much of the last few months and as such has regularly been missing from the Tottenham side, something which Spurs fans may have to get used to a little bit more.
And that’s because speculation is and has been building regarding the 29-year-old’s future at the club, what with his contract up in 2019, and a one-year trigger set to bring a £25 million release clause into play.
As such, a summer move could be in the offing for the Belgium international, and recent reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will seek ’50 million euros’ this summer to sanction his departure.
Obviously, it’s not a figure that some of the biggest clubs in the continent won’t be able to match, but at the age of 29 and the potential of a cheaper deal 12 months down the line, it remains to be seen whether clubs will be willing to match that asking price this summer.
