Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern will be concerned by news coming out of the club that one of their main stars has started to cast doubt out his time at the club.
Mousa Dembele has revealed that he will not consider signing a new deal before the start of the World Cup, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the next season. Mauricio Pochettino is surely keen on keeping the Belgium international on his books at the club and is prepared to let the midfielder enter the final months of his deal, before offering him new terms to stay with the north London outfit.
Dembele has not ruled out the possibility of signing a new deal stating that he is very happy at Spurs, however, the 30-year-old has confirmed that he will not entertain talks until the end of the World Cup.
“We have not really talked about an extension of my contract,” he told Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure via the Telegraph.
“At the beginning of the season, I said ‘I had physical problems, I want to see at the end of the season how I feel’. That’s what the club and I decided by mutual agreement.
“If we talk about a new contract in the middle of the season, it will cost energy. Imagine a player feels not appreciated after a disappointing proposal, it can disrupt his game.
“At this moment, I am very happy at Tottenham. I do not lie when I say that I do not think about a big transfer. I want to play a World Cup and afterwards we will see.”
As you can imagine, considering some of his performances this season, the punters propping up our bar would hate to see him depart, believing him to be one of the most complete central midfielders in Europe.
The locals in the Tavern will be desperate for Dembele to sign a new deal to remain at the club for the foreseeable future after he became an instrumental way in how they play. With interest from other big European sides surely looming, fans will be keen for Pochettino and co. to get a deal done as soon as the World Cup is over.
